MEC LEHARI APPLAUDS TRAFFIC OFFICERS FOR STERLING WORK AHEAD OF NW SOPA

The MEC for the Community Safety and Transport Management, Sello Lehari has applauded the sterling work of traffic officers in the province. The officers have, despite all challenges become steadfast in applying and maintaining law and order. This time targeting, as MEC instructed, Mahikeng illegal taxi operations at hiking spots.

During the Valentines Celebration weekend of 14 to 16 February 2020; traffic officers and SAPS in Mahikeng took to all corners, entrances and exit roads in Mahikeng. The operations were conducted during the day and at night, at identified hotspots and notorious routes like the R503 to Lichtenburg, R42 to Zeerust and N18 to Vryburg were a hive of road block, albeit low key.

These operations were targeting illegal taxi operations, hiking spots, illegal taxi ranks, road worthiness and general road safety hazards in Mahikeng.

Of the 129 stopped vehicles, 16 drivers were nabbed for driving without licenses and or Permits. Six were fined for driving unlicensed vehicles and five for using cellphones whilst driving. There were a variety of offences for which over R53 000 worth hefty traffic fines were issued including drunken driving, reckless and negligence driving and passenger overloading. Nine vehicles which were found to be un-roadworthy were impounded immediately, including a Light Delivery Vehicle (LDV) and a Minibus.

The North West Province, is preparing for State of the Province Address, (SOPA) to be tabled by Premier, Professor Job Mokgoro on Friday, 21 February 2020. Until after the SOPA, this joint law enforcement program will remain enforced and unannounced or sporadic operations on course. JAWS, National Traffic Police, Municipal and Provincial traffic are hard at work, '24/7 Wayawaya' is in full swing.

Meanwhile, MEC Lehari implores motorists, road users, pedestrians and stray animal owners to cooperate with both traffic and police officers especially in Mahikeng and around the Provincial Legislature precinct.

“Maintenance of law enforcement and good road safety conducts is the responsibility of all of us, as motorists and pedestrians. We are serious when we say we want to make the Province the prototype of law and order, especially in respect of road safety”, said MEC Lehari.

"The Province came fourth in total in fatal accident reduction but second in the number of crashes during the festive period. We want to be number ONE, in both reduction of fatal accident and road crashes. And we can achieve that provided motorists bring 'their shoulder to the wheel', obey traffic regulations as well as cooperate with law enforcement agencies. Our law enforcement officers are going to be friendly to those who obey the law but will mete out stern warning and issue fines or effect arrest to those who break the law”, declared Lehari boldly.

From Thursday, 20/02/2020, the eve of the State of the Province Address, several routes will be closed and traffic re-directed, hence corporation with traffic controllers is implored.
